SCHOOLCHILDREN donned all manner of moustaches on Friday to do their bit to support Movember.

Staff and children at Amesbury CE Primary School paid £1 to buy a fake moustache, which they wore for the entire day, and raised £170 for the charity, which raises money and awareness of men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

Headteacher Yvonne Harris said everyone is so aware of women’s cancers but children rarely understand that men get cancer too. “Some of the children were asking about Movember and we’ve got a few children who have lost male family members so we decided we should do something about it, not just to raise money but also to raise the children’s awareness.

“A couple of the Year 6 children have been instrumental in publicising it and it was a great fun day while raising money and awareness.”

Movember, which has raised £184million worldwide since its launch in Australia in 2003, sees men grow moustaches for the month of November to raise money.

Businesses and groups across Salisbury are taking part, including a team from Giant Peach Design and staff at Fountain Way mental health hospital in Wilton Road.

We will be doing a fundraising round-up at the end of the month so if your office is taking part in Movember, contact the Journal newsdesk on 01722 426511 or email newsdesk@salisburyjournal.co.uk.
