A COUPLE who have been happily married for 70 years say their relationship just gets “better and better”.

Kathleen and Denys Wilson celebrated their 70th anniversary on Tuesday and they received a card from The Queen and a letter from Prime Minister David Cameron to mark the occasion.

The couple met at a church in Blackheath, London where Major (retired) Wilson was a chorister and Mrs Wilson was a member of the congregation.

They married at St Gabriel’s Church in Plymouth.

Major Wilson had joined the army “as a boy” in 1936 and served all over the world.

His wife travelled with him, and the couple and their children, John and Elisabeth, lived many places including Germany and Singapore.

In 1958 Major Wilson was awarded the MBE for his military service in Burma and he received the honour from The Queen at Buckingham Palace.

Mrs Wilson spent her early career serving with the WRENS and she also worked at the Commissioner-General’s office in Singapore and at Bovington Camp in Dorset.

The couple moved to Harnham 42 years ago while Major Wilson was stationed at Larkhill.

Mrs Wilson was a governor at Harnham Infant School and the couple became members of St Martin’s Church, where Major Wilson was a church warden.

They enjoyed travel and gardening and still spend lots of time with their four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

The couple celebrated their platinum anniversary with a family party on Saturday, and will be marking the occasion with their friends from church on Sunday.

“There is no secret to a long marriage, it’s just give and take and working together through good times and bad,” said Major Wilson, 92.

“We fell in love when we were young and have been in love ever since.”

Mrs Wilson, 89, added: “We have a wonderful family and a lot to be thankful for.

“It just gets better and better all the time and we still love each other very much.”
