TRACTOR thieves were stopped in their tracks by badgers on Wednesday.

The thieves took the tractor and drove it through a fence before it got stuck in a badger sett on land between Chitterne and Tishead, where they abandoned it.

The incident came after an attempted theft of another tractor, valued at £15,000, from a farm in Shrewton last Monday, January 14.

The vehicle was driven to another part of the farm before the thieves were disturbed by the farmer. Wiltshire Police’s Rural Crime Team is urging people to take security measures following a spate of similar incidents in south Wiltshire in the last few weeks.

Inspector Christian Lange said: “These offences can have a significant impact on farmers who are often unable to carry on with their work without the tractors and have to deal with costs to replacing this very expensive equipment.”

Anyone with any information regarding these offences in asked to contact Wiltshire Police on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Police are also urging people to join the Wiltshire Rural Crime Team page on Facebook.
