Black ice on the roads
8:59am Monday 28th January 2013 in News By Morwenna Blake
POLICE have issued an urgent warning to motorists following 53 accidents this morning due to black ice on the roads.
Wiltshire police is urging drivers to take care and even re-consider their journey if it isn't necessary this morning. Black Ice has appeared on most of the roads in the county and is believed to have been due to the rain washing away the grit from when it snowed.
The road traffic accidents have occurred mainly in the Chippenham and Swindon area and no one has been seriously injured. However, motorists need to be especially careful driving this morning.
Police are liaising with the Highways Agency and the council to work on the worst areas affected.
Superintendent Nick Ashley said:"We have had a unprecedented number of road traffic accidents this morning.
"Thankfully, although there have been some injuries, these have not been serious but it is only a matter of time if motorists do not take care on the roads.
“After the heavy rain most of the grit that was placed on the roads during the snow has been washed away by the rain, this has then frozen and left black ice all over the roads. This can make roads extremely dangerous and I am urging motorists to take care or even reconsider travelling this morning."
