Volunteers needed for community speed watch scheme

A NEW community speed watch scheme in Wilton is looking for volunteers.

The new scheme will be running in Shaftesbury Road and volunteers will be part of a team trying to reduce traffic speed and make the roads safer.

They will be given training in using speed devices and provided with support from the neighbourhood policing team.

PCSO Ben Brewster said: “Speeding is an issue in this particular area of Wilton and it is important that we work as a community to prevent the problem from getting worse.”

There can't be much community interest in doing this if they need to advertise in the paper...this wasn't started by a group of like-minded residents then?

I've got really good idea, let's give them a uniform too and call them...........I know, police!

This is not a job for the public, it's just another way of saving money and reducing the police force. The vast majority of people speeding through an area are usually local so it will be neighbours and friends that CSWs will be reporting on. Thats why it should be handled by an impartial authority.

How about bringing back the former speed cameras and team? Proven to reduce speeds and save lives. Also provides employment.

exactley, an impartial authority needs to do this. People need to be able to drive at good speeds. More focus should be on people who dont have the necessary skills to drive, or even drive too slow, they are dangerous also

Many authorities have the speed of their vehicles controlled by the satellites.This should be fitted to all new cars.The cost very little.This saves fuel ,wear and tear and reduces the accident rate on these motors.There would be then ,no need for speed cameras,,and the police could devote more time in other areas, these volunteers that are now sought could devote their time to helping the elderly or some other useful need
