FIVE people have been arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary following an incident in Salisbury in the early hours of Sunday morning.

A group of four men broke into a flat in Old Street just before 2.30am and assaulted a 51-year-old man who had been asleep in bed.

The victim was able to escape to a neighbour’s house for help while the men searched the property.

They then ran off, leaving the victim needing hospital treatment for broken ribs, cuts and bruises.

Seven warrants were executed on Monday involving a team of more than 30 officers and police dogs.

The five men, aged between 22 and 32, were arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary and causing grievous bodily harm with intent. They were taken to Salisbury Police Station and released on police bail pending further inquiries.

DS Jim Stannard from Salisbury CID said: “This was a nasty attack and the victim is fortunate not to have sustained any very serious injuries.

“We have made a number of arrests in connection with the incident but need the public to come forward with any information they have, as it may be vital to our investigation.”

Police described the men as white, of slim build and possibly aged in their 20s.

Three of the men were wearing dark clothing with scarves over their faces and one man was wearing a fluorescent jacket and dark trousers.

Anyone with information is asked to contact DS Stannard at Salisbury CID on 101 or Crimestopppers on 0800 555111.
