VOLUNTEER tree wardens are being asked to come forward to play an active role in conserving and enhancing tree and woods near their homes.

Salisbury City Council has joined other parish councils in Wiltshire by signing up to the national Tree Warden Scheme in that hope that people will come forward to work with the council and Wiltshire Council in caring for wooded areas.

Wiltshire Council’s Countryside Officer Vicky Roscoe said: “Appointed tree wardens in Salisbury will be joining a team of more than 70 friendly and enthusiastic wardens across Wiltshire. “So far we have had wardens involved with planting and caring for trees; undertaking tree surveys and leading guided tree walks.”

The wardens are not expected to be experts, rather people with an interest who will be given training and a handbook to guide them.

“This feels like a really exciting opportunity for people to have a practical say on how Salisbury’s trees and woods are looked after,” said the council’s senior parks officer Chris Stringer.

“It is also a chance to get outdoors, meet new people and learn some new and useful skills.”
