Man killed in fire in Landford
A MAN has died following a house fire in Landford.
The man, named locally as osteopath Paul Vickerman, is believed to have been disabled following an accident several years ago.
Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service was called to the property in Lyndhurst Road at 3.30pm yesterday and found a bedroom well alight.
A police investigator said: “Somebody saw smoke coming out of the house and I understand a few people attempted to get into the house but were prevented from doing so because of the smoke – the room was gutted.”
Salisbury fire station manager Tim Gray added: “There is substantial damage on the ground floor. “The downstairs room appears to have been used as an improvised bedroom.”
The cause of the fire is not believed to be suspicious but investigators are working at the scene this morning to try to ascertain how the blaze broke out.
Formal identification of the victim has yet to take place.
Dr Vickerman had worked as an osteopath in Romsey.
A neighbour said: “He was my osteopath for years, he was a very nice person. “He was very intelligent and worldly wise.
“I think he had an accident a couple of years ago and broke his hip and his pelvis so he couldn’t get about – this is such a shame after everything he’s been through.”
