Bourne Valley Historical Society

AT its annual meeting on Thursday, February 21, the BVHS celebrated its 65th anniversary.

Held in the Glebe Hall, Winterbourne Earls it was attended by 44 members. Before the business of the evening began, members enjoyed an excellent dinner provided by the Crown Inn, Cholderton.

The chairman, Tony Lyons, presided, and in his annual report said that the original 12 members who formed the society in 1948 could not have possibly imagined how it would prosper.

With a nine fold increase in membership, a hugely expanded archive and having increased its area of interest from just the three Winterbourne villages to the whole of the Bourne Valley from Cholderton down to Hurdcott, the society still remained true to the constitution laid down so many years ago.

The archivist, Tony Goodenough, reported on another good year of continuing to catalogue the thousands of items in the archive and of obtaining many more photographs, maps and documents.

He went on to report an increasing number of inquiries via the society’s website and the help we were able to give.

The treasurer, Ray Bray, explained the annual statement of accounts and was pleased to announce that, although the annual subscription should really be increased, the recent grant of gift aid status to the society meant that it could be held at its current rate for another year, after which it would be reviewed.

The committee was thanked from the floor for its work over the past year and was re-elected en bloc.

Following the formal business members enjoyed a light hearted historical quiz and a lot of discussion over a number of unusual objects brought along by members for identification.
