Major plans for Downton Post Office
THE Post Office in Downton is set to move to a new location in the High Street.
It was announced on Friday that the Post Office plans to move the branch from its current home at 12 High Street to within the Spar shop at 16 High Street.
The move would mean opening hours would more than double and the Post Office services would be open seven days a week.
As part of a major modernisation and investment programme, the Post Office plans to update the network and extend the opening hours for customers the new branch will have a Post Office serving point at the retail counter - a new concept for delivering services, with Post Office products and services available alongside retail transactions during shop opening hours.
Post Office regional network manager Will Russell said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in the area and we are confident that this proposal and the new modern branch will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.
He added: “The modernisation is part of a major investment programme to convert the Post Office network to new-style branches and this investment, the largest in the history of the Post Office, makes a commitment to no more branch closure programmes.”
Opening hours at the new location in Downton would be Monday to Thursday 6am to 8pm and Friday to Sunday, 6am to 9pm, offering customers 101 hours a week to access Post Office products and services.
People living in the village are being invited to have their say on the proposals in a consultation being run until October 17.
The Post Office, now independent of Royal Mail, is the largest retail network in the UK, with more than 11,700 branches. It is also one of the fastest growing financial services companies and is developing its online and telephony services.
