Family fun at Mere Carnival
CROWDS lined the streets to celebrate one of Mere's biggest ever carnivals at the weekend.
Community spirit was in the air as hundreds of people turned out for a day of fun on Saturday, the culmination of a week of events in the town including bingo, quiz, film and comedy nights.
The children's fancy dress procession assembled at Mere School during the afternoon and headed to the square led by the carnival princess, band and majorettes.
The evening procession then assembled at White Road before scores of bright and colourful floats heading through the town, along with the carnival princess, Shaftesbury Silver Band and majorettes.
The overall winner was Who You Gonna Call, by Hot Rock Carnival Club, and second place was Butterfly Ball, by Magnum Carnival Club. And there were scores of other winners in a range of different classes.
The party atmosphere carried on long into the evening with live music at The George and the Old Ship Inn. Carnival secretary Carol Payne said: “We had an excellent day with one of the biggest crowds ever lining the streets of Mere and enjoying one of our biggest events.
“We had Lizzy the stilt-walker and fire eater entertainer, face-painting, barrel organs in the square with our carnival royals riding in the heavy horses and wagon from Broadwater Farm in Mere for the afternoon. The Shaftesbury Silver Band led both processions.”
