Guide to safe 'greenlaning' on Plain
THE Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO) has launched a blueprint for good ‘greenlaning’ on Salisbury Plain as it encourages drivers of 4x4 vehicles to behave safely and responsibly off-road.
Working with a range of partner organisations, DIO has published the Greenlaning Good Practice Guide to educate the public on how to use the Plain effectively and sustainably for off-road driving.
The Plain is popular for greenlaning and increasing numbers of large off-road convoys are gaining unauthorised access to the military training area, causing damage and putting themselves at risk as well as breaking the law.
James Nevitt, DIO environmental adviser said: “Salisbury Plain is a popular destination for greenlaning due to its extensive network of byways. The network is virtually unmatched anywhere else in England and, as a result, motor enthusiasts come from all over the country to enjoy the off-roading experience.
“As a military training area, Salisbury Plain is a unique environment that has to be shared by both military and civilians alike. We hope that this new guide will remind people how to use the tracks appropriately to maximise their longevity, minimise vehicle damage and to keep themselves safe.”
