Birthday celebrations for street pastors
SALISBURY Street Pastors celebrated their fourth birthday with a spot of impromptu dancing in Guildhall Square, where they set up an information stall at the recent vintage market.
They also handed out 600 cakes, many of which had been decorated with the logos of the Street Pastors or the Purple Flag award. The pastors are 50-strong and patrol the streets on Friday and Saturday nights until 4am, offering help or a listening ear to the vulnerable. Brian Percey, Street Pastor co-ordinator, said: “It was fantastic to be able to bless people with cakes, right in the heart of the city, while still in daylight.
“Many of the recipients wouldn’t see us normally as we are usually in the square after midnight.” He said he wanted to thank all the people of Salisbury who have supported the Street Pastors over the last four years as well as Salisbury City Council, Wiltshire Council, Wiltshire Police, Pubwatch and the many churches of the city.
Since they started in Salisbury in September 2009, the Street Pastors have completed 350 patrols, totalling 8,500 hours.
