UTC moves a step closer
COUNCIL leaders this week agreed the next steps for the South Wiltshire University Technical College, which is due to welcome its first students in September 2015.
On Tuesday, Wiltshire Council’s Cabinet considered a report covering three specific aspects of the authority’s commitment to the development of the college.
The college will specialise in defence and protective science industries and will see 600 students educated in Salisbury.
The first aspect agreed was a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the council, Wiltshire Police, the Wiltshire and Swindon Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) and the UTC.
It outlines the proposed framework within which all parties will work to enable the UTC to be developed on part of the existing Wilton Road police station site The second was to instruct council officers to develop the most cost-effective financial package to enable the purchase of the required element of the police station site by the council.
This will secure the £7.5m investment from the Department for Education’s Education Funding Agency for the delivery of the UTC.
The final aspect of the report asked council leaders to note that officers are working with police to secure a custody suite to serve Salisbury and the south of the county.
