Celebrating Apple Day
AUTUMN’S bounty was celebrated on Saturday to mark Annual Apple Day.
In Downton an event was organised by Downton Green Group, with hundreds of people turning out to celebrate this year’s bumper harvest of seasonal British fruit.
Apple expert Peter Shakespeare was busy all day helping people tell their russets from their pippins.
“The day was really successful, we were very pleased with how it went,”
said Hilary Mace from Downton Green Group.
“So many people grow apples on their trees but don’t know what variety they are, which is why it is great to have an expert in the village.”
Money that was raised at the event will go towards purchasing a community juicer.
And in Salisbury the second annual event was held at the Community Orchard at Fisherton Recreation Ground, with apples for people to try, juice-making and expert advice and information.
Apple Day was originally set up to help reinvigorate local orchards, preserve endangered species of apple and celebrate British native apples.
