SALISBURY has been awarded the prestigious Purple Flag status for the second year running.

The Purple Flag is similar to the Blue Flag for beaches, and is awarded to towns and city centres in recognition of somewhere people can go to have a great and safe night out. It is backed by the government, police and businesses. Places have to offer safe ways for visitors to travel home and provide a good mix of venues.

Maggie Rae, corporate director for Wiltshire Council, said: “We are immensely pleased to have achieved this recognition for the second year running. It is brilliant news for the city of Salisbury.

“Purple Flag is the ‘gold standard’ for town and city centres at night, and it aims to raise standards and improve the quality of our city between the hours of 5pm and 5am. It reflects the work of the council, police, city council and local businesses to make Salisbury a desirable night-time destination for people of all ages.”

Purple Flag assessors, who visited Salisbury highlighted:

• Street pastor work

• Integrated public health and public protection teams

• Good range of food and dining

• Vintage markets

• Youth partnership

• Leadership of the partnership is very strong taking a strategic and proactive approach to the evening economy

The assessors said: “Despite the harsh economic climate there has been a great deal of improvement in the night time economy.”

Wiltshire Council’s cabinet member for public protection Keith Humphries, said: “I am delighted we have achieved purple flag status for a second year. Salisbury is a beautiful historic city and we will continue to work together with our partners to ensure the city continues to be a safe, attractive destination for all.”

Brian Percey coordinator of Salisbury Street Pastors said: “We are delighted that Salisbury Street Pastors were again recognised by the Purple Flag assessors for their 'excellent contribution' to the night time economy. “However, what excites me personally is that the Purple Flag isn't just an award to be hoisted on one of the city flagpoles, but it's about relationships and continuing partnerships and a vehicle to really see Salisbury ‘thrive after five’.”

Partners on the working group include: Wiltshire Council, Salisbury City Council, Wiltshire Police, Salisbury City Centre Management, Pub Watch, VisitWiltshire, Salisbury Vision, Street Pastors, The Chapel Nightclub, Tourist Information, Value Cars, Salisbury Playhouse, City Hall, Wilts and Dorset Buses, Spire FM.

Other private businesses including shops, restaurants, pubs and clubs, local media, sport and entertainment providers have also supported the Purple Flag initiative.
