WOMEN are being urged to join forces for this year’s Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, which is now open for entries.

Every day, about 84 people are diagnosed with cancer in the south west.

Race for Life is a way to raise money while showing support for those who have fought or are fighting the disease at an event that celebrates life and solidarity.

Lisa Sweeting, Cancer Research UK’s Salisbury event manager, said: “We’re calling on Salisbury’s mighty-mums, gutsy-grans, feisty friends and go-getting girls to join our formidable army and take on cancer at this year’s Race for Life.

“We know how committed Salisbury women can be when they really make up their minds to do something. We want to harness that power to stop cancer in its tracks, by raising money for life-saving research.

“Race for Life is non-competitive. It’s not about being fit or fast. Most women are able to walk 5k in an hour while chatting and having fun. Or they can choose to jog, run or even dance around the course if they prefer.”

Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is a women-only series of 5k and 10k events that raise millions of pounds every year to help defeat cancer by funding life-saving research. Last year 2,300 people took part in the Salisbury event, raising £116,000.

This year organisers hope even more will join in and help reach a target of £120,000.

Ms Sweeting said: “Race for Life is an amazing way to celebrate life but also remember those who have been lost to the disease. There are over 200 cancers and we won’t give up until we find cures for them all.” Race for Life 5k will be at Hudson’s Field on Sunday, June 29 To enter go to raceforlife.org or call 0845 600 6050.
