ONE of Salisbury oldest residents celebrated his 103rd birthday on Sunday.
Archie Campbell Murdoch had lunch with his family and friends at the Silver Plough in Pitton.
Born in Casablanca in 1911 and losing his father at the battle of the Somme in 1916, Mr Murdoch studied at Winchester College and then Oxford before training as a singer under Willi Domgraf-Fassbaender in Berlin just before the Second World War.
He served as an auxiliary fire officer in Battersea during the blitz and, once hostilities were over, began a lengthy teaching career.
He and his late wife Sheila, who also lived to celebrate her 100th birthday, settled in Salisbury after returning to the UK from Malta in the 1980s.
Mr Murdoch remains fit and spry and, as a devout catholic, attends Mass daily at St Osmund’s Church in Salisbury.
