MESSAGES of condolence have been flooding in to former Spire FM presenter and keen charity fundraiser Chris Ewington, who died today.

Mr Ewington had been battling lung cancer, which had spread to his neck.

Tributes are being paid to the well known local radio DJ, who presented Spire FM’s breakfast show for six years, on Facebook and Twitter.

Mr Ewington was diagnosed with cancer last year at the age of 40.

He underwent chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatment at Salisbury District Hospital and Southampton General Hospital but discovered in January that the illness had spread.

While undergoing treatment Mr Ewington pledged to support the Stars Appeal’s CT Scanner Campaign.

He helped to organise the Salisbury Variety Show held at Salisbury Playhouse in January, which raised thousands of pounds for the charity.

The event brought together local performers who sang, danced and entertained a large audience.

Mr Ewington, who lived in Laverstock with his wife Liezel, was due to compere the event but was too unwell, although he was sent live footage of the standing ovation given on the night.

He had left Spire FM in 2012 but was still well known across Salisbury and received hundreds of messages from well wishers while he was fighting cancer.

Speaking to the Journal after his diagnosis last year he said: “The sense of community we have in Salisbury is incredible. I love living here, nowhere else could ever feel like home.”
