AN armed response team, the fire brigade and Wiltshire Police officers were called to the area around Salisbury District Hospital on Saturday evening as four separate incidents – including a man making death threats - took place within an hour and a half.

At 6pm police were called to the accident and emergency department after receiving reports about an abusive patient.

The situation calmed down when they arrived, and officers gave advice and reassurance to staff but no arrests were made.

An hour later a fire broke out at Oak Tree Field, a traveller site near the hospital.

The fire started in one caravan and quickly spread to a neighbouring trailer.

Charred animal bones were found in one of the caravans and the discovery was reported to Wiltshire Police for further investigation. A spokesman for Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service said the cause of the blaze was not thought to be suspicious and was caused by an object being left too close to a fire.

Both caravans were completely destroyed in the fire but no one was hurt.

Firefighters from Wilton and Salisbury put out the blaze and removed gas cylinders from the area to prevent an explosion.

While they were still dealing with the fire, the emergency services responded to a call about a man making threats to kill on the hospital site.

The man, who was already wanted by Hampshire Police in relation to a separate incident, was arrested by the force’s armed response group assisted by Wiltshire Police officers near Entrance A.

He was not in the hospital buildings at the time of the incident or the arrest.

The fire brigade also had to deal with fire alarms at the hospital being set off maliciously at 7.30pm on Saturday evening.

The Salisbury crew that had been attending the Oak Tree Field fire went to the hospital to ensure it was a false alarm.
