POKER fans in Salisbury are to have their own league, run on a not-for-profit basis.

Peter Johnson of Salisbury Poker Club said: “There has always been a big company from the big cities cashing in on us, so we have decided to start up our own.

“We want to get across to people who think you need to spend hundreds at a casino in the bigger towns that you don’t.”

There will be five venues – the Dust Hole in Tollgate Road on Mondays, Salisbury Snooker Club in Tollgate Road on Tuesdays, the Bacchus Hotel, Wilton Road, on Wednesdays, the Royal Oak in Devizes Road on Thursdays and the Huntsman Tavern, Gigant Street, on Sundays.

The club plans a rolling 12- week league, with a final on the Saturday of every 13th week.

Entrants can just turn up at any one of the venues at 7.45pm for an 8pm start. They will pay £5 for chips to take part, and there will be a nightly prize pool as well as end-ofseason prizes.

“It’s just for fun,” explained Mr Johnson. “It’s what we call a sit-and-go tournament, when you’re out you’re out, you can’t buy your way back in. It’s open to all ages, and lots of ladies play.”
