THE A303 has been branded one of the worst roads in the country as Easter holiday traffic caused lengthy snarl-ups.

The stretch of road between Cholderton and Wylye, which includes the notorious Countess Roundabout, appeared on a list of traffic hotspots best avoided in the holiday season.

Only the M25 and the M4 were expected to be busier between Good Friday and Easter Monday.

Traffic queues on the A303 are usually bad as people head to the West Country for holidays but local people say they have been much worse since the A344 near Stonehenge was shut last year, and they fear the new Stonehenge visitor centre could make the problem even worse this year.

A study into traffic flows on the A303 is underway along with a review of Countess Roundabout and English Heritage has requested traffic signs to advise motorists when the Stonehenge visitor centre is full.
