YOUNG carers took to the high seas in a sponsored sailing challenge that covered 100 nautical miles.

Seven young carers from across the county sailed the boat Moosk owned by the Island Trust, a Devon charity that aims to improve the lives of disadvantaged people.

They learned important skills including personal safety, how to sail and cooking, and all gained Leadership and Royal Yachting Association Competent Crew awards.

The young carers are hoping their adventure will raise £500 to help other young carers in Wiltshire.

“It was the best, a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” said Jade Munday, 14, from Salisbury. Lynn Gibson, assistant chief executive at Community First Wiltshire, said young carers often take on huge responsibilities at home and need time to enjoy outside challenges and opportunities.

“It was a wonderful experience that has not only benefited the young carers themselves but will also help other young carers in future,” she said.
