The incident happened near Cowslip Farm, off Devizes Road, on Sunday, May 18 when the two-year-old boy was out with his family.
Three people with five dogs, all off their leads, arrived in the area and a Jack Russell bit the child on the leg, causing a small puncture wound.
The dog’s owners then left the scene without offering any assistance.
The child was taken to hospital for a check-up but was not badly hurt.
Police are appealing for information about the incident, which happened at about 6.45pm.
The people involved were two men and a woman all in their 40s or 50s.
