AS the World Cup fixes all eyes on Rio, children at Salisbury Cathedral School made a virtual pilgrimage to Brazil.

Pupils in years 5, 6 and 7 were immersed in the sound of samba batucada, the exciting multi-layered, polyrhythmic percussion-based music so intrinsically linked with the South American city.

They were introduced to the various samba instruments such as surdo, chocalho, reco reco and agogo, before learning each instrument’s specific role and rhythm. Then they worked on constructing a multi-sectioned piece for an outside performance.
