SALISBURY could still lose its youth hostel, as the developers appeal against the decision to refuse planning permission.

Wiltshire Council’s planning department rejected the plans to turn the youth hostel in Milford Hill into retirement homes in January because members felt it would result in a loss of tourist accommodation that is needed in the city.

The Youth Hostel Association says the building is not viable as a youth hostel anymore and does not provide the service people want. It wants to find an alternative site in the city for a new hostel.

Genepi Property wants to convert Milford Hill House into four two-bedroom apartments and build 11 new homes in the grounds. The company is appealing against the council’s decision and a planning inspector will consider the case. A date for the hearing is yet to be set.
