PHE Porton to move to Essex with loss of 550 jobs

STAFF at PHE Porton, formerly the Health Protection Agency, have been told that their board is pressing ahead with plans to move the facility to Harlow in Essex.

MP John Glen is meeting Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt this afternoon to protest and ask for a rethink.

Public Health England has been wanting for some years to consolidate all its facilities in Essex but hopes rose at Porton in 2012 after the Government put off a decision, asking for more work to be done on the business plan.

Now news of the impending loss of 550 jobs from the area comes just a week after the Government announced funding for a new science park at Porton, saying it would create 2,000 new jobs in south Wiltshire.

Mr Glen has been trying in vain to question Prime Minister David Cameron about the decision in Parliament this week. He said: “This is not joined-up thinking.”

No, it isn't 'joined up thinking' it's business and, as we all know now business comes first and, at the expense of people's lives.

I think Mr Glen needs to get his priorities right

Porton Down is nothing less than a nightmare for the residents of Porton and Idmiston who have to put up with their ignorant and inconsiderate employees treating our villages as a rat run and risking the lives of our children.

Fewer people working there can only be a good thing, even better if it was closed completely.

Please do move to Essex and leave our children and our villages safer as a result

No tears will be shed here !

Um porton down has been there for a life time. I would advise people not to move into a new area without doing there homework, its like moving into a house near a river and then complaining cause you get flooded. If you dont like it move.
