AN ACTION group is calling for changes to be made to an accident blackspot after four road crashes happened in four weeks.

The group, A30MPH, is concerned about the frequency of accidents on London Road, Salisbury, as cars cross the Salisbury Tunnel Junction railway bridge.

They are demanding that changes are made to the road layout and the speed limit before an even more serious accident happens.

Kristina Stephenson, who helped form A30MPH, said: “I have lived here for 15 years and over the years we have had a number of accidents but we recently decided to form an action group to log these events.

“It happens more often when it is wet and it really should be a 20mph speed limit over the bridge.”

Mrs Stephenson believes it is only a matter of time before a serious accident happens and is campaigning to raise awareness of the issue.

She added: “I have two teenage sons and I feel that every time we use the bridge as pedestrians we are taking our lives into our own hands.

“The lorries go far too fast over the bridge and they hurtle past centimetres away from your arm.

“There are a number of schools in the area and my biggest fear is that a child is going to be seriously injured.”

The action group is calling for cars to go slower and wants the council to install a flashing sign that will warn motorists who are exceeding the 30mph speed limit.

They say a warning sign about the dangerous bridge is obscured by the hedge. Mrs Stephenson said: “Cars also go too fast and don't realise that the bridge has a bend causing them to hit the curb which makes them spin off the road.

“What we really need is a flashing sign to tell motorists they are speeding which would be effective in making cars slow down.”

Wiltshire Councillor Bill Moss says the signage needs to be improved so motorists are more aware of the danger of the bridge.

“We should improve the signage on the road to make it more obvious to cars that there is a hazard.

“The road was built for horses and carts so it was never designed to handle the level of traffic that goes over it now. A lot of visitors to Salisbury who haven’t been here before wouldn’t expect it to be a dangerous bridge.”

A Wiltshire Council spokesman said: “We would encourage anyone who has any concerns about a particular stretch of road to raise them through their local area board where these can be discussed.”
