A GROUP of Salisbury teenagers is hoping to change attitudes towards politics and culture among young people, writes Dermot Martin.

They want to form a focal point in the city for young people to become involved in social and personal development projects.

One of the organisers is George Billinge, a sixth form student who helped organise a meeting at The Unit in Endless Street this week to gauge opinion on the best way to increase awareness of the arts and science among young people.

“We are interested in creating a centre in Salisbury to set up an environment in which political and cultural awareness can flourish.

Too much apathy is permeating our society, not only in politics but also in the arts and sciences,” said George.

The idea is in its infancy but George says there are specific aims group members want to achieve.

“We'll use our centre to host talks from a variety of interesting people including politicians, leading scientists, businessmen, artists and musicians.

“We might offer it as a venue for people to start and manage microbusinesses.

“We would try to support local artists and musicians with exhibitions, open mic nights, gigs and rehearsal space. We might even organise petitions and help cultivate various causes,” he said.

“We’ve been allowed to use The Unit as a space to start with, but we would like to expand and we’re looking at marketing and branding, finance, potential venues and planning events and services.”
