A CONSULTATION into the future of the Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service will continue for another six weeks and is to investigate a number of options, including a possible merger with Dorset Fire Authority.

A parallel consultation is being held in Dorset during the same time period and, in both counties, local residents can go online to access further information and complete a questionnaire.

In addition, 12,000 households across Wiltshire and Dorset have been randomly selected to receive the questionnaire directly.

Information has also been placed in public buildings and libraries, and consultation forums are being held with the public, businesses and voluntary organisations.

Simon Routh-Jones, Chief Fire Officer of Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Whilst we face a challenging financial future, we are keen to encourage people to contribute to our consultation.

“We want to ensure that we explore every possibility to transform our service, but also help to protect our essential frontline activities. We have a number of potential options, and it is vital that we know what local people think.”

Cllr Chris Devine, chairman of Wiltshire and Swindon Combined Fire Authority, said that all possibilities remain on the table and the response from the public will go a long way to deciding if the fire authorities merge.

He said: “We have a wonderful fire and rescue service in Wiltshire and Swindon, and the Combined Fire Authority is determined to maintain the excellent professionalism and high standards which our staff set and deliver for all residents in our communities.

“We would like your views on how the authority should continue to strengthen its prevention and protection activities while, at the same time, coping with significantly reduced grants from central government.”
