A FUNFAIR in Wilton was attacked by vandals on Friday night, with power cables cut and signs posted saying: “Please don’t come back”.
The funfair which has been visiting Wilton for more than 60 years, was in town for the weekend.
Funfair owner William Cole said: “It was quite a vicious thing done by someone with clear intent. They used a sharp cutting tool and cut cables to all the rides, even some of the bigger cables, which is very dangerous.
“My family has been coming here for over 60 years and we go all over the south west and have never ever had anything like this happen. I’m completely bewildered as to how anyone could do something so dangerous and stupid.”
Mr Cole was able to repair most of the damage on Saturday in time for visitors, although some of the lights were out on the rides. The fair will be part of the Charter Fair in Salisbury from Sunday to Wednesday.
Sgt Dave Whitby said: “This is a senseless and pointless act of damage which has left the local community and fair holders annoyed and bewildered.
“The fair has been coming to Wilton for many years and is well supported by residents of the town. I am not aware of anyone making any complaints about it and cutting into power cables is a stupid and dangerous thing to do.”
There are reports of a male acting in a suspicious manner in the area of the fair and nearby Greyhound Pub.
Police are appealing for information.
