A SALISBURY school has unveiled six refurbished science labs after a £500,000 grant from the Academies Capital Maintenance Fund.

St Edmund’s pupils now have access to 21st century labs, in a drive to encourage more girls to enter science and engineering careers.

The official opening was performed by Professor Penelope Endersby and Dr Melenie Murphy from the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory at Porton Down.

The pair are passionate about convincing more girls to get involved in science and engineering.

Professor Endersby said: “I’m delighted and honoured to be asked to open the new science facilities at St Edmund’s.

“It’s really important for girls to appreciate the wide range of scientific and technical careers open to them.

“I hope this visit will help them to visualise where the work they do in their fine new labs might take them in future”.

The newly refurbished laboratories provide light and bright accommodation, and access to opportunities in the science curriculum which were previously difficult to offer in outdated facilities.
