COMMUNITY groups and companies in Salisbury took part in a fundraising netball competition raising money for the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign.

The event was organised by Girls Love Fit, a group of women fitness instructors in the city, and took place on December 21 at Chafyn Grove School.

Manager Jenny Hawker said a lot of ladies who attended their classes had been affected by breast cancer or knew someone who had been, and they wanted to help raise funds for the appeal.

She said: “The competition went really well – we had nine teams enter and the atmosphere was great. We raised £500.

“Net Baubles came first with Look At Her Putt finishing second place in a great grand final.”

Among the teams to enter were those from Laverstock Badminton Club, Salisbury Hospital and former Chafyn Grove pupils.

The group also organised a charity Christmas Pole and Aerial Jam at their studio on December 18, raising £100.

In Downton staff at the food distributor company 3663 raised more than £100 by making a donation and wearing a Christmas jumper to work.

And Vanessa Hawkings, who had breast cancer herself five years ago and features in the hospital campaign promotional material, donated the money she would have spent on Christmas cards to the campaign

The appeal, backed by the Journal, aims to raise £750,000 for a purpose-built breast care unit where patients will be able to receive faster diagnosis and treatment.

It will also mean they will no longer need to visit other departments or repeatedly dress and undress for mammograms and scans.
