A SPECIAL parade has been held for a retired civil servant who was decorated with a commendation for meritorious service in the New Year's Honours list after spending a year restoring the Salisbury air cadets headquarters.

Warrant Officer Anthony Packwood has volunteered with 1010 (City of Salisbury) Squadron for close to 40 years and decided after retiring with the MoD to clear some clutter at the Old Sarum site.

Dedicating on average six hours a week his original estimate was that it would only take a few weeks, but the job turned out to be much harder than he thought.

WO Packwood stuck at it and methodically de-cluttered each room in turn making numerous trips to the re-cycling centre.

Squadron commander Flight Lieutenant Jim Gillespie praised his efforts saying that "anybody else would have given up".

He said: “His drive and determination for the cadets to achieve their best has never wavered. Warrant Officer Packwood’s dedication over many years to the Air Cadet Organisation goes beyond what is required and expected of the average volunteer."
