READERS who rely on mobile libraries may see their stop cut from the route as Wiltshire Council seeks ways to save money.

A consultation is under way over plans to axe 49 stops, reducing the number from 267 to 218 in the county.

And there may also be fewer visits, with the weekly service chopped back to once a fortnight or even once a month.

If the changes do go ahead they will come into effect on October 26.

The stops under threat of closing are those which Wiltshire Council says have fewer than three customers and are within 2.5 miles of a branch library.

At the moment the council operates four mobile libraries and plans to sell one and keep one as a spare.

It is not yet known whether any members of staff will be made redundant.

Questionnaires are being handed out to those who board the buses to be handed back on July 31.

Parish councils have also been contacted for their views.

Stops being reviewed in Salisbury and South Wiltshire include those in Bemerton Heath, Bishopdown, Harnham, Fovant, Idmiston, Laverstock, Redlynch, Semley, Stratford-sub-castle, Tidworth, Wilton and Wylye.
