SALISBURY'S airways are set for a shake-up with the launch of a new community radio station.

The City Sound will be broadcasting online only at first but the group have big plans to eventually hit the FM frequencies.

Thom Belk and Andy Munns, who are behind the project, want to showcase the local music and alternative acts which aren't currently receiving air time in the mainstream industry.

"It started a few years ago when me and Andy presented Whites Radio," Thom said. "It didn't manage to take off but the idea has kind of been there for about three years.

"At the moment there are some really great bands out there which are being missed. The key thing we are offering is a different style of Radio"

"On the BBC nationally there is too much talking, what we want is a music ethos."

The new station will begin broadcasting on Friday, July 10 with a 24-hour broadcast. Based mainly from the Arts Centre they will be also provide educational workshops and opportunities for people wanting to get into the industry. In addition they plan on running a Saturday sports show which aims to showcase the best of the action which is taking place from across south Wiltshire.

He added: "We will play all sorts of music, report on local news and keep you up to date with local sport. We are a not for profit company set up to deliver great radio to the people of Salisbury.

"If any people get an idea for a show, whether it be for drum and bass, metal or indie or anything else, we want to be able to give them the opportunity to get involved.

"It will be done on a voluntary basis and it will be great experience and something to put on your CV."

The group are also looking for businesses to get behind the new station by providing advertising.
