A WOMAN undergoing treatment for breast cancer in Southampton came up with a novel way of staying positive – by running from her home to the train station everyday.

Sue Shaw from Old Sarum was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer last June and since then has had three operations and six rounds of chemotherapy.

Earlier this month, she underwent three weeks of radiotherapy.

She said: “Two weeks before the treatment, I started feeling like it was a bit scary and was eating, and probably drinking, a bit more than I should.

“I thought ‘what can I do to bring myself into a positive frame of mind again’? I decided I would start running just to keep healthy and fit.

“I hatched the idea that maybe I could run to the railway station for the Stars Appeal Breast Cancer Unit Campaign.”

Receiving the ok from the breast care team, Sue ran to the station before catching the train to Southampton and then a bus to the hospital.

To raise awareness of the campaign, she wore a Stars Appeal T-shirt, said hello to everyone she passed and carried a pink rucksack with a collection box on it.

She says she wanted to make the statement that it is “ok to be seen as you are”, adding: “I wanted to do something positive for the breast cancer team and for the people of Salisbury who are cared for there – and it was good for me. I kept to a healthy diet, cutting out junk food and alcohol.”

With the distance being 3.5 miles from Sue’s front door, she ran 52.5 miles over the three weeks, with the last day taking place on Friday, April 22.

“I believe it did help,” she said. “It was tough at times and I wouldn’t recommend everyone does it but people could set themselves a challenge like doing a good deed.

“It took about an hour but I would stop at the fire station and occasionally stop for selfies with people.”

Sue, who will receive ongoing check-ups for the next five years, raised £600 for the new breast cancer unit.

She is also planning to run the 10k Race for Life for Cancer Research in Salisbury in July.
