A Wiltshire councillor who campaigned to have a box junction on a busy roundabout was shocked to discover it had been placed in the wrong direction.

Cllr Graham Wright was travelling towards the Countess Roundabout at Amesbury on the morning of Wednesday, September 14.

He expected to see the two new yellow boxes on the westward section of the roundabout, which had been closed for the previous two nights.

Unfortunately the boxes had been painted on the eastward section.

Cllr Wright said: "No-one goes eastward, not compared to the amount of cars that use the westward section.

"I just find it mad that this thing has happened.

"This error is just another financial waste following the millions of pounds they spent redesigning the Countess Roundabout, which is as useful as a chocolate teapot and in itself caused more problems than it solved."

Residents and councillors alike had been lobbying for a change to the busy road, with crossing the A303 from North to South often a frustrating and difficult experience.

Cllr Wright understood the dissapointment with the blunder.

He said: "We have been waiting a long time for this, so as you can imagine, to see the markings where they are will obviously be a source of irritation."

The councillor has been down to the roundabout several times since discovering the error.

Drivers, mistaking him for a worker, have wound down their car windows and shouted "You've put the boxes on the wrong side".

Highways England have been contacted about the mistaken box junctions.

Asset delivery manager Kevin Hamer said: "We listened to concerns raised by the local community and drivers about issues at the roundabout before designing the new road markings.

"Highways England will be monitoring traffic flows following the installation of the markings and we will make informed decisions and take any necessary action based on the results."

Cllr Wright has already brought the matter to the attention of Wiltshire Council.

He said: "I want to assure everyone that I am already on the case and I am demanding that they return as soon as possible to resolve this issue.

"It is sad that those who live in ivory towers continue to irritate those of us on the frontline.

"I will succeed but it will take more time."
