A PARISH councillor has dubbed fly-tipping in Salisbury a “shameful disgrace” after an entire prefabricated house was dumped on Christmas Eve. The house was left under Dean Hill on the West Grimstead to West Dean road in East Grimstead.

A resident said: “The area is notorious for fly-tipping, but this has taken things to a whole other level. This is just nuts.”

Eric Daffern, chairman of Grimstead Parish Council, said: “Fly-tipping in the greater Salisbury area is a shameful disgrace, it is an embarrassment to the area.”

He added that, because of poor mobile phone signal in rural areas such as Grimstead, it was not always easy to report fly-tipping by phone from the exact location, as Wiltshire Council suggests, and said the council was “obviously many months behind” in removing rubbish that had been reported. He said: “South Wiltshire has a severe version of a common problem. Fly-tipping in the area is happening faster than Wiltshire Council can remove it.”

Cllr Daffern said the fly-tipping in his parish was mainly old kitchen fittings, refrigerators and office rubbish, as well as garden waste.

He said the “obvious solution” would be to install cameras in the hot spots and said it was his understanding that Wiltshire Council were buying a camera to repel fly-tippers and “catch them in the act”.

Wiltshire Council said a contractor had now cleared the house away.
