WALKERS are being challenged to dress in fluorescent tutus and wear flashing headwear at this year's Midnight Walk for Salisbury Hospice.

As in previous years, the walk is supported by the Journal and offers two scenic routes, comprising six miles and 10 miles.

The event, on Saturday, May 13, begins and ends at Five Rivers Leisure Centre, with a midway stop at the hospice for refreshments and then back through the Cathedral grounds.

As ever, those walking in memory of someone special will be able to dedicate a star to them on the memories' board outside the cathedral.

Katie Wilson took part in last year's event in memory of her mum who was cared for by the charity and says she did the walk so "others could benefit from the love and care" her mum received at the hospice.

She said: "The care both she and our whole family received was exceptional and the doctors, nurses and volunteers were brilliant. She was very comfortable and the environment meant that she was at peace. We could not have asked for more."

Caroline Scoulding, who also supported the 2016 walk, said: "The reason I support this charity is my way of giving something back for all the help, support and care they gave me and my late husband.

"In a time of grief, sadness, confusion and having absolutely no idea how to deal with every day, the hospice team were there to support and listen.

"When you had days of utter hopelessness, when the fear of not knowing how you could possibly function, there was always someone to listen and help.

"Losing a love one is so hard, but the hospice team made it possible. I will be forever grateful knowing my husband's last days were the best anyone in that situation could hope for."

Last year's walk raised more than £50,000 and attracted 400 people.

The registration fee, which covers the cost of running the event, is £15 for adults and £10 for children.

Participants must raise a minimum of £50 in sponsorship.
