A CHILDREN’S nursery is appealing for help to find new premises after its lease was terminated “without reason”.

South Hills Nursery in Hindon has used a mobile unit on the site of Hindon Primary School for more than ten years.

The popular nursery which received a ‘good’ Ofsted rating in November recently signed a new five-year lease for the site but it was then changed by the school to a one-year lease before the school then issued the termination notice. If the nursery cannot find a new home, it will be forced to close.

Parents who say it is a “fantastic” asset to the community are both angry and frustrated by the lack of information from the school over the termination.

Laura Hoar whose four-year-old son attends the nursery said: “The nursery is fantastic, I work three days a week and they were the only nursery I could find that was flexible so they could take my child during the time I needed - it enabled us to survive as a family.

“My son will start school in September so I’m not affected by the nursery closure but I just don’t like that it is closing without a plausible explanation.

“There’s a lot of strong feeling in the community - people love having the nursery and seeing the children around the village.

“They are also concerned of the potential negative impact on the school because it only has around 38 pupils.”

The community has been rallying to help the nursery but a new home has not yet been found.

A recent Hindon parish newsletter says: “With a nursery and primary school in the village, young families are attracted to move here and that is exactly what rural villages like Hindon need to keep them alive and thriving.”

Parents have set up a campaigning Facebook page to gain support for the nursery, saying it is run by “wonderful, enthusiastic and caring people”.

The nursery which currently has 11 children aged two to four employs three members of staff.

A statement issued by the school said: “The governors would like to confirm that the lease agreement with South Hills Schools Ltd is being terminated, without prejudice, from October 2017. “This will result in the closure of the South Hills Nursery, Hindon School site from October 2017.

“We agree with the local community that provision for local pre-school children is important, and to this end we will be reviewing the situation in order to offer alternative provision if practically possible.”
