AMONG the large number of entrants for this year’s Race for Life, one runner will have more reason than most for wanting to help drive forward the charity that the event supports, Cancer Research UK.

Sarah Warren, a member of the City of Salisbury club, took up running three years ago.

Taking part in the 2014 Race for Life, she raised funds for the charity on behalf of her mum who died from cancer just a week after the event.

Then a year ago Sarah was diagnosed with breast cancer, undergoing surgery, radiotherapy and most recently chemotherapy.

Although only halfway through her chemotherapy treatment, she will be taking part in this year’s race on Sunday, July 9, along with an enthusiastic supporters’ team.

She said: “I hope my story might help promote the love I have for Salisbury’s running club and all the lovely friends and teammates I have there.

“I’d like it to maybe also inspire more people to take up running, to support the charity and Race for Life.”

  •  You can still sign up for this year’s Race For Life, which is taking part in Hudson’s Field on Sunday, July 9.

There is a 5k race and a 10k race, which you can run, jog or walk.

Every day, 90 people are diagnosed with cancer in the region.

Race for Life, in partnership with Tesco, is holding events throughout the country, with the aim of raising millions of pounds to aid research in the fight to defeat cancer.

A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said: “One in two people will be diagnosed with cancer at some stage in their lives, but more people are now surviving the disease than ever before.

“Survival rates have doubled since the early 1970s.

“Around £2 million was spent in the South West last year, enabling key scientific and clinical research to take place.”

She added: “Race for Life events are non-competitive and participants can choose to walk, jog or run around courses.

“Every step participants take will help to bring forward the day when all cancers are cured.”
