A SENIOR druid is calling for Stonehenge to be removed from the control of English Heritage.
King Arthur Pendragon has launched a petition, accusing the agency of commercialising Stonehenge "to the extreme".
He criticises the decision to charge for parking at the solstice celebrations, which he describes as a 'pay to pray' policy.
He also claims English Heritage has priced tourism out of reach for the general public, to whom the monument was left.
And he accuses the organisation of having supported unsuitable road improvements in the World Heritage site.
He said: "They have rejected the advice and concerns of Unesco, senior archaeologists, historians, druids, and environmentalists. This shows they are not fit to manage the 'Jewel in the Crown' of a World Heritage site."
A spokesman for English Heritage said: " “We are – of course – aware of Mr Pendragon’s views and entirely reject his accusations.”
The petition is available at petition.parliament.uk/petitions/200246
So far it has just over 450 signatures.
