A THREE-year-old boy is walking to raise money for the children’s ward that helped his baby brother.

Teddy Hunt is used to spending time at Salisbury District Hospital’s children ward, with his little brother Alfie.

Alfie went into heart failure and failure to thrive at just one month old.

He had already spent several weeks as an inpatient at the hospital, and was transferred to Southampton for his first heart surgery.

The boys’ mum, Verity, said Salisbury District Hospital had “played a huge role in our lives” since learning that Alfie has Down’s Syndrome and congenital heart disease.

“The care Alfie receives from the paediatric team there is first class,” she said. “Plus they look out for our whole family - not just Alfie!

“The doctors, nurses and health care assistants at SDH were amazingly kind to all of us during those very dark and scary weeks.”

She said Teddy has developed a “really special relationship” with little Alfie.

“He tells mummy when he thinks Alfred is hungry, shows Alfie toys, cuddles him and cries when he cries,” Verity added.

To show his support for the hospital, Teddy is going to walk 3km – one for each year of his age – in the Stars Appeal’s Walk for Wards next weekend. The family has so far raised £765, smashing their original target of £200, and completed training walks at parks and along the coast.

Walk for Wards, in aid of Salisbury District Hospital’s charity the Stars Appeal, takes place at Wilton House on Sunday, July 1.

Walkers can choose from 10km, 5km or 3km routes and raise money for a specific hospital ward, or the charity’s ongoing MRI scanner campaign.
