The Bishop of Salisbury, Dr David Stancliffe hopes to be back in post in the new year, after suffering a stroke.
Dr Stancliffe has been recuperating at home following the stroke earlier this year.
During this time he has been working on a book which he published this week.
The Lion Companion to Church Architecture is an illustrated volume containing many images and photographs taken by the bishop himself.
Dr Stancliffe said that the book, which contains images from churches across the world, had been a source of joy and encouragement in recent months and it focuses on how buildings help people to worship.
"I have been taking photographs and giving talks from these images for thirty odd years," he said.
"Lots of people go visiting churches but have no real understanding of, or connection with, what actually goes on in them.
"We need to encourage people to think three dimensionally about their worship."
