A NEW book celebrating Salisbury Cathedral in pictures in its 750th year goes on sale this week.

Cathedral 750 has been produced by the Salisbury Journal and is packed full of images reflecting a year of events held to mark this milestone in the iconic building’s history.

From the visit of Archbishop Desmond Tutu to the consecration of a spectacular new font by the archbishop of Canterbury, from the flower festival to a medieval fair, Journal photographers Roger Elliott and Tom Gregory were there to capture it all.

The cathedral, dedicated in 1258 on completion of decades of building work, is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of medieval architecture in the country.

It is unique among medieval English cathedrals, being built within one century with no substantial later additions, but it is much more than just a historic monument.

It is the Cathedral Church of the Salisbury diocese, and so the mother church of several hundred parishes in Wiltshire and Dorset, and it is a centre of pilgrimage for hundreds of thousands of visitors every year.

Cathedral 750 aims to celebrate not just the rich history of years gone by but the tapestry of life being woven today.

The book is £4 and will be available at the Cathedral bookshop, the Salisbury Journal offices at Rollestone Street and various newsagents across the city from tomorrow.
