ACTOR George Baker was the guest of honour at a gala dinner held in the Guildhall on Friday, helping to raise £1,000 for this year’s mayor’s appeal.

Baker, who starred as Ruth Rendell’s Inspector Wexford on the ITV series of the same name, was the after dinner speaker at the event, which also included an auction of promises, raffle and champagne reception, with entertainment provided by a string octet from South Wilts Grammar School.

The proceeds will go to Cancer Research UK, the mayoral charity chosen by the city’s 748th mayor, Iris Evans.

The next event in aid of the charity will be a craft fair to be held in the Guildhall on December 11.
