WITH the average Christmas dinner serving up 956 calories, Salisbury residents can beat the post-Christmas bulge by getting on their bikes for a deserving cause.
At the Salisbury Plain Bikeathon on December 28, as well as burning off the turkey and mince pies, cyclists will raise funds for cancer charity Leukaemia Research.
Event organiser Darren Smith said: “Blood cancers have a devastating effect on families, especially kids and I wanted to do something to help make a difference to the lives of families affected by leukaemia, lymphoma and other blood cancers.”
Starting at 10am, the 20-mile route across Salisbury Plain will go through Erlestoke and Eddington, also offering a rare opportunity to cycle through the ‘lost village’ of Imber, an uninhabited village used by the military for training.
Air cadets and the St John Ambulance will be on hand to help ensure the event runs smoothly.
Organisers have over 50 entrants signed up so far, but have spaces for up to 500 cyclists. Each participant will be entered into a free prize draw to win a new Coyote mountain bike.
The entry fee is £5 and entrants must be over 18-years-old to take part. People can also register on the day for the same price.
All the sponsorship money raised will go towards Leukaemia Research’s vital work in finding a cure and improving treatments for blood cancers.
