DOWNTON was blooming at the weekend when the popular Summer Horticultural Society Show took place.

About 35 exhibitors from all over Wiltshire, Hampshire and Dorset took part in the highly contested - and very fragrant - floral and handicraft competitions.

On show were sweet peas, roses, floral art and miscellaneous displays in 48 separate classes.

Southern Electric again sponsored the event. Three local members of Southern Electric staff are keen gardeners and took part in the sweet pea contests, including Dave Manston who won the sweet pea cup and the best exhibit of sweet peas.

Society treasurer Dave Goddard said "We were delighted with the event as lots of people attended and the quality of the floral exhibits was extremely good. A real credit to all our exhibitors who spend months preparing for shows like this."
