Amesbury Tesco gets go ahead

PLANNING permission has been granted for devel opers to build a Tesco store at London Road, Amesbury.

Supermarket giants Asda and Tesco went head to construct superstores in Amesbury, with Asda wanting to build on Solstice Park and Tesco applying for London Road.

A planning inquiry, held at the Bowman Centre in Archers Gate in Amesbury, began in January and con cluded its final week in April.

Residents of Amesbury and the surrounding area attended the inquiry to voice their views, and the majority were in favour of more choice for shoppers.

At the meeting Cllr Dennis Brown said: “All I ask of you, on behalf of the residents of Amesbury, is that you give us that important retail choice and allow another super market to be built here.”

Planning inspector Mary O’Rourke led the inquiry into both applications and issued her decision this morning.

The Secretary of State agreed with her recom mendation and considered the Tesco application to be preferable to the Asda pro posal in terms of accessi bility and the sequential approach, design and landscape impacts and employment policy.

Yet another terrible decision. What is wrong with these people? There was so much potential at Solstice Park to build something actually wanted and needed. They should hang their heads in shame.

FANTASTIC. Once again the people of Amesbury were listened to and got what they preffered or did they.
So I will still be making my weekly trip to Andover to use Asda, Iceland and Wilkinsons. Amesbury does not get my money.

Why are people who have nothing to do with Amesbury making all the decisions - and what happened to:

"The local Stonehenge Chamber of Trade poll resulted in 1,345 signatures for Asda and only 27 for Tesco. In addition an independent Populus poll in February showed that 91% of local people support Asda and 92% feel that Solstice Park is the right place for such a store to be built."

As previously said, Andover will still be getting my business too.

The last thing Amesbury needs is a Tesco in London Road, do the council want to kill off Amesbury town centre? Surely the more sensible and fair to the shops in the high street would have been Asda on solstice park. What hidden agenda has gone on as I know most people in the area wanted an Asda and not Tesco, we already have an unwanted one in Durrington. I guess money talks and democracy is dead.
